training to be a mneme therapist
May 2 2007, 6:39 PM EDT | Post edited: May 2 2007, 6:39 PM EDT
I am looking for classes to become certified in mneme therapy. I live in Longmont, Colorado, but am willing to travel up to an hour away. Are there job opportunities for this type of therapy?
anyone know where I should look?

You should check out the web site for Art Without Boundries. http://www.artwithoutboundaries.org/ It was begun by Noelle Hammer I am in training myself, but there is a process. Read all the links about the apprenticeship and it will probably clarify how you can do this regardless of what city/state you live in. In effect, you find enough locations to provide services to, and they will send a therapist to train you and do the therapy, then you take over. This is a very truncated version of the process, and you really need to read the information contained within the site especially http://www.artwithoutboundaries.org/BusinessOpportunties.html where you will find the details. There is sweat equity involved, and it does take time and effort. Within the site they have a ton of information and I will say from my point of view, standing on the precipice of all there is before me, the people have been very helpful, and responsive. Give it a shot, I think you will like what you find there. I know I did.

Good Luck!

Hi Lucy,
Thank-you so much for responding! I was very excited about the prospect of doing mneme therapy, but felt a bit overwhelmed with knowing how to go about the process. I decided to take one step at a time, and when questions arise, to email or call Noell... or perhaps you! The more the merrier! I have a BA in art, and have worked with people with disabilities through the years, but I have not done a lot of sales, so this feels a bit daunting. I am thinking about finding a partner to do the sales, but not sure how to go about that... any suggestions?
ad in the paper? The first step is submitting art work, correct?
thanks for your help! ( I was feeling like a lone ranger!)
Heather

I too have a BA in art. I am not so comfortable with sales, and initially I was going to hire a friend who is good at sales, but they are uncomfortable with the pay issues, so I am going to tackle it myself. As for finding someone, paper, internet, etc. Just make sure that when you find someone that they go through the proper approval process for Noell too before you get too terribly attached right away just to be safe.

Yes, the first step is the application and putting in your samples. She is looking for color and composition mastery just FYI.

I am feeling a bit like a lone ranger myself. I am not completely positive but I think maybe I am the ONLY person in Texas so someone is going to have to travel to train / help me.

Feel free to contact me, if I know an answe I will be happy to share. If I don't we can find out together!

Good Luck and best wishes!
Lucy

Hi, Heather. Things have changed quite a bit since I found out this therapy works with Autistic children. We were able to do away with the fundraiser, which was daunting and by charging $50.00 an hour for the therapy, step around the administrators who responded "No money in the budget for therapy." and take the decision to the activity director who put it in the activity budget. I picked up 7 accounts in 2 weeks after I started making appointments to demo with the AD instead of the administrator. Autistic schools will welcome you to come do the therapy during their afterschool care and parents are pleased to pay $25.00 for a session, since we get such quick and dramatic results. Once you do get results, parents tell other parents and soon they are lining up for your services. I have one public school that hired me to deliver services to their students during the school day. I took a cut in hourly, but I go weekly. Anyone can call our toll free number 866-938-6546 and talk to me personally about the program. I just want to see more children like Cara, who was a typical very low functioning autistic 10 year old and now is carrying on conversations and surfing the internet in 8 weeks. Thank-you so much for the message! I am very excited about the prospect of using art to help children with autism. I have worked with children who have autism, and really enjoyed it - and had hoped some day I would find a way to put the two together (without having to get a masters in art therapy) I am trying to get a picture posted...

Hi Joanna,
Just wanted you to know I haven't forgotton about you - just have been busy and a bit scattered.
I spoke with Noell about the program a bit, and it sounds like Boulder has quite a few people interested as well as Denver. I will give you a call by the weekend, if not sooner, and hope we can talk a bit. Heather
